In 2019, Victory Cruise Lines will demonstrate its leadership in Great Lakes cruising again, by being the first cruise line offering an in-depth cruise experience of Lake Superior. Or “The Big Lake” as many locals call it. Lake Superior is the world’s third-largest freshwater lake by volume and the largest by volume in North America. Victory Cruise Lines will sail from Detroit to the wonderful Canadian town of Thunder Bay, and back.
On October 1, I met most of the Lake Superior ports, visitor bureaus, and stakeholders in the picturesque Fort William in Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay is a special place; it is the last city before the majesty of the great Canadian wilderness starts. Fort William used to be the biggest fur trading post in the world in history, connecting the hunters out of the Canadian wilderness, with sea routes across the Great Lakes to Montreal and into Europe. And still, Fort William is a magical place, where history comes alive with character interpreters from the past. If you are lucky, you are even allowed to shoot your own canon or musket! And finally, it is a place to discover the authentic First Nation culture of the area and of the past.
One thing became very clear from the Lake Superior conference; the locals are incredibly proud of their “big lake”. Victory Cruise guests can expect a warm welcome in every unique port of this cruise. Where in some parts of the world people are complaining about “overtourism”, you can expect here only the tranquility of visiting authentic places in small groups, for what they called in the conference a “non-plastic” authentic experience to explore North American culture.
The Lake Superior cruise will contain both natural and cultural highlights. In Duluth, we will climb to Hawk Ridge, where these extraordinary hunting birds take a rest on their Arctic migration, and we will make a visit to the “Depot” with its exceptional collection of trains and carriages. In Houghton, we will visit the Quincy Copper Mine, and the internationally-recognized A. E. Seamen Mineral Museum. In Marquette, we will visit the Michigan Iron Industry Museum and the Maritime Museum and Lighthouse. On the way to Lake Superior, we will visit well known Victory Cruise highlights like Mackinac island in Lake Michigan and Little Current in gorgeous Georgian Bay. Finally, for a lot of quests, one of the highlights will be the transfer of our Victory II through the Soo locks from Lake Huron to Lake Superior.
