The Official AQV Alaska Packing Guide

Alaska packing guide

Depending on what time of year you go to Alaska will determine what weather you experience. Those who venture to the Last Frontier at the beginning of the season in April, May, and June, can expect warmer temperatures. However, the warmest month isn’t until July, when temperatures can get as high as 90 degrees but usually average between 50 and 60 degrees. With the highs and lows everchanging, Alaska is one of those places that is quite difficult to pack for. Luckily, our team of experts is here to help with an Alaska packing guide.

Alaska Packing Guide:

  • Wool socks
  • Gloves
  • Hiking sneakers
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Weatherproof pants
  • Weatherproof jacket
  • Warm under-layers, such as Long Johns
  • Fleece pullovers
  • Shirts for layering
  • A bathing suit

Packing for Alaska is all about layers. You can get winter, spring, summer, and fall all in one day. Whether you are on your Alaska adventure early or late in the season, we recommend bringing items you can layer with. Everything from a t-shirt to thick long sleeves can come in handy. The more layers you have, the more you can accommodate whatever Mother Nature throws at you.

Expedition Days

On expedition days, you will have the opportunity to hop aboard a Zodiac or climb into a kayak. These adventures are tons of fun and get you up close to glaciers, waterfalls, and wildlife. However, these days can also get very wet. Between unpredictable weather and the occasional splash while exploring, getting wet is a possibility. Thus, these are the days that we recommend weatherproof or waterproof pants and jackets. If it gets warm, you can always remove a layer.

The Polar Plunge

The polar plunge is an amazing opportunity for guests to get into the cold Alaska waters. We recommend bringing a bathing suit for this experience and the luxurious hot tubs on the top deck. Even if you don’t think you will decide to take the plunge, it never hurts to be prepared. Once you see how much fun everyone is having jumping into the ice-cold water, you might change your mind.
